Plants in the primarily tropical and subtropical Melastome Family (Melastomataceae) are herbs, shrubs, trees, and lianas with simple, usually opposite leaves with secondary veins parallel to the midvein, radially symmetric flowers with 3-6 petals (usually 5) and a matching number of sepals, and fruit in the form of a dry or fleshy capsule or berry.
